Therapy Approaches and Support

Solution Focused Brief Therapy
What is it?
Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) is a fast-acting approach that helps you start living the life you want. Rather than focusing on your problems or analysing them, SFBT looks at what you do want, how you’d like to feel, and what’s already working. It encourages hope and builds on your existing strengths, skills, and resources to move toward your preferred future. At its heart, SFBT is empowering: it recognises that you are the expert in your own life and capable of finding your own solutions.
Why I use this approach?
Each of us has innate wisdom and knows what changes we want to make for the better. SFBT focuses on solutions and achieving results quickly, but that doesn’t mean it’s less thorough than longer traditional therapies. It can produce profound, lasting changes in a fraction of the time using a highly effective approach. SFBT highlights your strengths and is based on hope rather than fear. Rather than revisiting the past, which can re-traumatise those with difficult experiences, our discussions are forward-looking and, as the name suggests, solution-focused. Evidence shows it is one of the most effective ways to bring about personal transformation, and many clients achieve outstanding results.
How it works
Rather than exploring your past to find the causes of your difficulties, SFBT focuses on the way forward from where you are now. It’s based on the principle that each person is the expert in their own life and capable of finding solutions when asked the right questions. As your therapist, I trust your insight rather than positioning myself as “the expert.” I ask questions to help you discover your own answers and bring about rapid, lasting change. SFBT can help with a wide range of issues, including anxiety, depression, low mood, stress, overwhelm, sleep difficulties, addictions, fears or phobias, low confidence, and relationship challenges. It can also support people coping with health-related challenges such as chronic fatigue or long-term pain.
What to expect
During SFBT, I will ask questions that help you define what you’re hoping for in life. Together, we’ll explore what would be different if these hopes were fulfilled — from how you feel inside to how you interact with others. You’ll also notice any elements of this life that are already in place, or any positive changes, however small, since your last session. People use SFBT to address a wide range of personal and work-related issues, including:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Low mood
  • Stress
  • Overwhelm
  • Sleep difficulties
  • Addictions
  • Fears or phobias
  • Low confidence
  • Relationship challenges
  • Coping with health conditions such as chronic fatigue or long-term pain
Hypnotherapy
What is it?
Solution Focused Hypnotherapy (SFH) is a gentle, evidence-based form of hypnotherapy that helps you make positive changes in your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. It combines the idea of focusing on what you want for your life with the relaxation and suggestion techniques of hypnotherapy. In a calm, focused state, similar to daydreaming, your mind is more open to helpful suggestions that support the changes you want to see, whether that’s reducing stress, feeling more confident, or coping better with challenges.
Why I use this approach?
Many of the patterns in our thoughts, beliefs, and behaviours run automatically, often without us realising it. Hypnotherapy is a gentle, effective way to shift these patterns because, in a relaxed and focused state, your mind is more receptive to positive change. At the start of the session, we discuss what you’d like to feel differently and how that might look in your life. Then, while you are in this calm, focused state, I guide you using both your own words and mine to support new ways of thinking and behaving. The experience is pleasant, similar to daydreaming, and you remain fully aware and in control throughout- hypnotherapy is not mind control.
How it works
Hypnotherapy helps you respond to situations in a more considered, intentional way. At the start of the session, we talk about the areas of your life you’d like to change, exploring what these changes might look like, how you might feel, and what you might do differently. Once you are in the relaxed, focused state of hypnosis, I reflect this discussion back to you, helping your mind become more receptive to new ways of thinking and behaving. This allows positive changes to take root and be sustained over time. Hypnotherapy can be effective for a wide range of issues, including:

  • Stress and anxiety
  • Sleep difficulties
  • Low mood
  • Fears or phobias
  • Low confidence or self-esteem
  • Relationship challenges
  • Coping with chronic pain or health challenges
  • Breaking unhelpful habits
What to expect
Being in a state of hypnosis is not like being asleep- you will remain fully conscious throughout, but you will feel deeply relaxed. I often use guided visualisation, asking you to picture certain things in your mind as if you were daydreaming. Images are powerful because they speak directly to your unconscious mind, complementing the spoken suggestions. Hypnotherapy is a complementary therapy and is not a substitute for medical advice. Always consult your doctor about any health concerns before trying complementary therapies.
Rewind Therapy for PTSD/ Trauma
What is it?
The Rewind Technique is a recognised and effective approach for people with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), particularly those experiencing flashbacks, intrusive thoughts, nightmares, or high levels of anxiety. It is sometimes described as “closure without disclosure” because it works without requiring you to talk in detail about the traumatic event itself. The technique helps your mind file the traumatic memory so it no longer triggers involuntary distress (voluntary recall remains), allowing you to feel calmer and more in control. It can be used for single-event traumas, such as accidents, abuse, or other distressing experiences, and can also support people with multiple traumatic events.
Why I use this approach?
The Rewind Technique is an effective and fast way to reduce the distress caused by trauma without needing to relive the event. It is suitable for most types of trauma, including those that are difficult or painful to talk about. Research and clinical experience show it can produce lasting relief from PTSD symptoms, helping people regain confidence, emotional stability, and a sense of control in their lives.
How it works
For a single traumatic event, the Rewind Technique often brings relief in just one session, although up to two or three sessions may be beneficial depending on the impact of the trauma. Each event is addressed separately if there are multiple traumas. You do not need to disclose details of the experience for the technique to work. During the session, you are guided through a mental imagery process that helps your brain file the traumatic memory so it no longer triggers involuntary distress (voluntary recall remains), while you remain fully in control. Occasionally, additional supportive tools, such as gentle guided imagery, may be used if they support the process.
What to expect
The Rewind Technique does not erase your memory of the traumatic event. Instead, it reduces the emotional intensity so that flashbacks, intrusive thoughts, nightmares, and overthinking become less disruptive. Many people notice improvements quickly, often after just one session, and symptoms of PTSD can lessen substantially. The therapy is designed to be safe, non-traumatising, and respectful of your emotional boundaries, and you remain in control throughout the process.
